Wiland resists Juve as København claim point

An outstanding FC København rearguard action led by goalkeeper Johan Wiland ensured that, as they did last year, Juventus departed the Parken after a frustrating 1-1 draw.

In last season's UEFA Champions League group stage it was FC Nordsjælland who shared the spoils but this time it was København and the indomitable Wiland who restricted the illustrious visitors. A Juventus triumph had looked likely when Fabio Quagliarella cancelled out Nicolai Jørgensen's opener nine minutes after the break, yet FCK somehow held on to register a Group B point on matchday one.

Thanks to a combination of defensive blocks and bravery by the keeper in one-on-ones, Ståle Solbakken's men could lift their arms in celebration at full time – even Wiland summoned one last drop of energy. It ensured the atmosphere inside the Parken was as electric after 90 minutes as it had been after one – Solbakken's pre-match wish for full-blooded support was certainly granted.

The banks of white shirts in the stands were rippling on 14 minutes when Jørgensen achieved what had seemed to be mission impossible before kick-off and put the out-of-form Danish champions ahead. He reacted first when a free-kick was sent into the box and the ball dropped at his feet.

The Italian title holders soon had the bit between their teeth, though, fashioning one dangerous attempt after another. It was the cue for Wiland to take centre stage. He denied Giorgio Chiellini's header, then from the resulting corner eclipsed that save with an incredible stop to divert Paul Pogba's close-range effort over the bar. It had appeared destined to restore parity. Wiland, so central to his team's success in reaching the last 16 in 2010/11, was at it again.

And so it continued, with Juventus pressing for the equaliser and København refusing to be cowed. At the beginning of the second period, Carlos Tévez escaped for a one-on-one; again the 32-year-old Swedish international prevailed. Even he could do nothing, however, when Tévez stepped over Federico Peluso's flat cross, enabling Quagliarella to get in front of his marker and spear the ball in.

Antonio Conte's side were not done, merely ramping up the pressure. Wiland was beaten again when Quagliarella got his head to Stephan Lichtsteiner's centre yet the crossbar came to his rescue. However, the keeper refused to buckle and he rebuffed both Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Giovinco after they had been sent clear on the home goal. Wiland promptly applauded the grateful fans at full time; as one, they applauded him back.
