Bayern work-rate satisfies Alaba

Man of the match David Alaba felt FC Bayern München's effort and application paid off in the reigning European champions' victory against PFC CSKA Moskva. Alaba's superb free-kick and sumptuous assist for Arjen Robben started and finished the scoring in a deserved 3-0 success for Josep Guardiola's charges. CSKA midfielder Zoran Tošić praised the hosts as the "best team in Europe" but felt his team might have taken more from the game had it not been for some sloppy defending from set pieces.

It was hard work. CSKA are a quality team with some good individual players. We knew that ahead of the game, but we focused on our own game rather than looking at our opponents.

It's a dream for any footballer to play at this level. The Champions League is always something special and we saw that out on the pitch. We wanted to play attractive football and managed to do so.

I didn't have to convince [Toni Kroos or Franck Ribéry] to let me take the free-kick. It was a bit too far out for Toni and so I gave it a go. It always feels great to score a goal, everyone knows that.

We have to be satisfied with a 3-0 home win. We always say it's important to get off to a winning start in the Champions League and we performed well tonight. We try to dominate games and put our opponents under pressure. We showed a bit more aggression than we did [against Hannover 96] at the weekend and we needed that.

We're happy; 3-0 is a good result. What more could you ask for? It's the first game in the Champions League and we know what needs to be done and how important it is to put the effort in, especially at home.

We did well today. We pressed them high up the pitch and didn't allow much through, which is great considering how we played against Hannover at the weekend. It's always important to get off to a good start in the Champions League.

We were focused throughout the match and can be satisfied with the result. We performed better than we have been lately, but you always have to remain self-critical. At big clubs it's all about improving the little things and that's what we've done. The team has a good mentality and long may it continue.

Bayern are the best team in Europe. They showed that last season. We knew that but we came here and tried to play; obviously at the moment they're much stronger than we are.

It was difficult [recovering from Alaba's early strike]. If they'd scored as a result of a nice move you can only congratulate them, but when they score from a free-kick – their second goal also came from a set piece – it's obviously something we need to work on.

We'll create more chances against Manchester City and against Viktoria Plzeň, so we're still in it. The competition has just started, we have five games ahead of us and we'll be doing our best to qualify for the next round.

There was a lot of emotion out there on the pitch. It was a big challenge for us to play in the Champions League, especially against the reigning champions, but of course we're disappointed about the result.
