Driven by a desire to remedy the ills of their previous two UEFA Champions League campaigns, Manchester City FC moved quickly to reinforce their star-studded squad this summer, starting with the €25m capture of Stevan Jovetić.
"I wanted a change. I loved living in Italy from every perspective, I was there for five years. However, in the end I decided to come to the Premier League, which is one of the top three leagues in Europe," said the 23-year-old forward, who came of age during five seasons with ACF Fiorentina.
Montenegrin international Jovetić, who has been joined in Manchester by fellow recruits Fernandinho, Jesús Navas and Álvaro Negredo, pinpointed new coach Manuel Pellegrini as a key factor in enticing him to England. "His philosophy is more or less the same as mine. I like the way his teams play, I saw that last season with Málaga. When we went away for pre-season we did a lot of running, but it was all with the ball. I think that's great and it really suits me," Jovetić told UEFA.com.
Since returning to Europe's premier club competition in 2011/12, City have twice succumbed at the group stage. Emerging from a tricky section containing FC Bayern München, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Viktoria Plzeň will test their resolve once more, yet Jovetić is keeping the faith.
"We were a strong team before, and now with Fernandinho, Navas, Negredo and myself, we're even stronger. We can definitely compete for our targets: the Premier League title and to go as far as possible in the Champions League," pledged the former FK Partizan attacker.
