Just four days after joining Manchester City FC, defender Martín Demichelis has been ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury.
Demichelis was reunited with Manuel Pellegrini, his former coach at CA River Plate and Málaga CF, on Monday when he completed a transfer from Club Atlético de Madrid reportedly worth in the region of €4.7m. The addition of the Argentina defender was viewed as cover for captain Vincent Kompany, himself laid off for six weeks because of a groin problem.
However, Demichelis, 32, sustained an injury in training this week, with a scan on Thursday revealing ligament damage. Though surgery is not required, he is expected to be sidelined until mid-October. The former FC Bayern München centre-back looks certain to miss City's opening two Group D fixtures, away to FC Viktoria Plzeň on 17 September and at home to the Bavarian outfit on 2 October.
