Manchester City FC have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of Martín Demichelis from fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Club Atlético de Madrid for a reported fee of €4.7m.
Demichelis, 32, has penned a two-year deal and will wear the No26 shirt at the City of Manchester Stadium. The Argentinian international, capped 37 times, is a welcome addition to the Citizens' ranks following the news that captain Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a groin injury.
Demichelis' move to last season's Premier League runners-up means he will work with Manuel Pellegrini – appointed by City earlier this summer – for the third time, having previously played under the Chilean coach at CA River Plate and Málaga CF.
"I am delighted to have joined City because I am still hungry for success and want to improve," said Demichelis, who won the Bundesliga four times in seven seasons with FC Bayern München prior to joining Málaga in 2010. "I have been in Europe for 11 years now and this was a great chance for me to play in the Premier League with such a big club."
Demichelis only switched to Atlético in July following the expiry of his Málaga contract and moves to Manchester without having made an appearance for the Rojiblancos. His new club were drawn to play Bayern, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Viktoria Plzeň in UEFA Champions League Group D.
