Porto go back to the future in Vienna

FC Porto kick off the new UEFA Champions League season by returning to the scene of one of their greatest triumphs.

• Porto's Group G meeting with tournament newcomers FK Austria Wien takes them back to the Ernst-Happel-Stadion which, in its previous guise as the Praterstadion, was the stage for the 1987 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, where they claimed their first major international honour by beating FC Bayern München 2-1.

• For Austria, European Cup semi-finalists in 1979, this is a first taste of the UEFA Champions League group stage. Porto, by contrast, are embarking on their 18th campaign, although under a coach who is new to the tournament, Paulo Fonseca.

Previous meetings
• Porto beat Christoph Daum's Austria in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup second round en route to winning the trophy under José Mourinho. Derlei struck the only goal of the first leg in Vienna after 70 minutes and scored again in the return, making it 2-0 with four minutes remaining to add to Hélder Postiga's first-half goal.

Match background
• Nenad Bjelica's Austria reached the group stage by overcoming Iceland's FH Hafnarfjördur 1-0 on aggregate in the third qualifying round before surviving a test of nerve against GNK Dinamo Zagreb in the play-offs. After a 2-0 first-leg win in Croatia, they trailed 3-1 at home until Roman Kienast's 82nd-minute goal secured a 4-3 aggregate success.

• Austria have never got the better of Portuguese opponents. Besides their 2002 defeat by Porto they twice lost two-legged ties against SL Benfica – in the 1961/62 European Cup first round and 2006/07 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round – and also fell short against CD Nacional in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage, drawing 1-1 at home and losing 5-1 in Funchal.

• Tomáš Jun and Manuel Ortlechner appeared in both games against Nacional, with Markus Suttner playing in the away loss. Austria's overall home record against Portuguese opponents is three draws (all 1-1) and one defeat.

• Porto won once on their travels in last term's UEFA Champions League – 2-0 away to the same Dinamo side that Austria beat in the play-offs last month. They also drew at FC Dynamo Kyiv (0-0) but then suffered defeats at Paris Saint-Germain FC (1-2) and Málaga CF (0-2), the latter result leading to their elimination in the last 16.

• Porto's only other trip to Vienna brought a 3-1 win at SK Rapid Wien on a snowy night in December 2010 when a Falcao hat-trick (42, 86, 88) secured a 3-1 victory for André Villas-Boas's side, which featured Helton, Jorge Fucile, Nicolás Otamendi, Fernando and Silvestre Varela.

• Porto, who went on to win the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League, had begun their campaign with a 3-0 home win against Rapid in which Rolando (26), Falcao (65) and Rúben Micael (77) got the goals.

Team ties
• Marat Izmailov was in the FC Lokomotiv Moskva team beaten 1-0 at home by Rapid Wien in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, with Kienast an unused substitute for the visitors.

• Kienast was in the Austria side beaten 6-3 by Portugal in the 2003 UEFA European Under-19 Championship semi-finals.

• Steven Defour played in Austria with R. Standard de Liège when they held FC Salzburg 0-0 to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32.

• Defour helped Belgium win 2-0 against Austria in Vienna in a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in March 2011, which Ortlechner watched from the home bench.
