København dismiss Jacobs, reappoint Solbakken

Ståle Solbakken, who oversaw FC København's run to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in 2011, has returned to the club following Ariël Jacobs' dismissal.

Without a win in five league matches this season, FC København have sacked Ariël Jacobs and replaced him with their former coach, Ståle Solbakken.

Ex-RSC Anderlecht boss Jacobs, appointed in summer 2012, presided over only four defeats in guiding the Lions to the Super League title last term, but has paid the price for three losses in the first four weeks of the new campaign.

"The results we have achieved on the pitch during the past month are not acceptable to FC København," managing director Anders Hørsholt told the club's website. "Therefore, we have chosen to end our cooperation with Ariël Jacobs."

Solbakken, 45, has signed a three-year deal to take over at the club he enjoyed considerable success with between 2005 and 2011, when he left for 1. FC Köln.

The former Norway midfielder, dismissed by English outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in January after six months in charge of the then second-tier team, steered the capital outfit to five league titles, one domestic cup and into the last 16 of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League – the best performance by a Danish side in the competition.

"Ståle Solbakken's qualities as a coach are indisputable, and at the same time he knows this club inside out and is part of its history. Therefore, we find that he is the right man for us, both on a short and long-term basis," explained Hørsholt.

Solbakken's first game back at the helm is on Sunday against FC Vestsjaelland. He will discover København's UEFA Champions League group stage opponents when the draw is made in Monaco on 29 August.
