PSV bid to break San Siro duck

PSV Eindhoven have not won at San Siro in four previous attempts but will hope for a change of fortune when they face AC Milan in the deciding leg of their play-off.

AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven meet again for the second leg of a UEFA Champions League play-off tie that remains firmly in the balance after a 1-1 first-leg draw in the Netherlands.

• Milan gained the potential advantage of an away goal through Stephan El Shaarawy (15) before Tim Matavž (60) equalised for PSV. The Dutch club have never won at a ground where they lost to Milan in the 2004/05 semi-finals – with a side featuring current coach Phillip Cocu – but have won on their last two trips to Italy and were 3-0 victors at Belgium's SV Zulte Waregem in this season's third qualifying round.

Past meetings
• Milan prevailed on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw in that 2004/05 semi-final. Carlo Ancelotti's side won the first leg 2-0 through goals by Andriy Shevchenko (42) and Jon Dahl Tomasson (90). Park Ji-Sung (9) – now back at PSV on loan – and Cocu (65) levelled the aggregate score in the second leg but Massimo Ambrosini's added-time goal took Milan through, despite Cocu then adding a third for Guus Hiddink's PSV.

• The lineups for that first leg on 26 April 2005 were:
Milan: Dida, Cafú, Stam, Maldini, Kaladze, Gattuso, Pirlo (Ambrosini 72), Seedorf (Serginho 81), Kaká, Shevchenko, Crespo (Tomasson 64).
PSV: Gomes, Lee, Alex, Bouma (Lucius 46), Ooijer, Van Bommel, Vogel, Cocu, Beasley (Vennegoor of Hesselink 61), Farfán, Park.

• Cocu also played both matches when the clubs met again in the next season's group stage, PSV drawing 0-0 away and then winning 1-0 at home – Jefferson Farfán (84) scored while Milan's ex-PSV defender Jaap Stam was sent off. The Rossoneri still finished top of the group with PSV second.

• Their only other meetings took place in the 1992/93 group stage when Milan won 2-1 in Eindhoven, Frank Rijkaard (19) and Marco Simone (62) scoring before Romário (66) pulled a goal back. Simone's early double (5, 18) ensured a second Milan victory back at San Siro as they won the group to reach the final while PSV finished bottom.

• PSV also lost at San Siro in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage when succumbing 2-0 to FC Internazionale Milano.

Match background
• This is the only tie of the play-off round that pits together two former European champions – PSV lifted the trophy in 1988 while Milan are seven-time winners.

• Third in Serie A in 2012/13, Milan have competed in the group stage in ten of the previous 11 seasons and 16 times overall.

• Dutch Eredivisie runners-up last term, PSV are looking to secure their first group stage participation since 2008/09. They have competed 13 times previously in the group stage, including 12 consecutive appearances between 1997 and 2008.

• Milan's home form was not wholly convincing in last season's UEFA Champions League. Although 2-0 winners against FC Barcelona in the round of 16 – a tie they eventually lost 4-2 on aggregate – they otherwise failed to win a game.

• Milan lost 2-0 to AFC Ajax in their last home meeting with an Eredivisie side in the 2010/11 group stage, albeit with progress to the last 16 already assured. Their overall record against Dutch clubs at San Siro is W6 D1 L3.

• Competing in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage, PSV finished third in their section, their only two wins coming against Italy's SSC Napoli – 3-0 at home through goals from Jeremain Lens, Dries Mertens and Marcelo, and 3-1 away as Matavž hit a hat-trick.

• PSV's victory at Napoli was their second in a row on Italian soil following a 2-1 success at UC Sampdoria in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage. Ola Toivonen scored twice to overturn a Giampaolo Pazzini goal for a Sampdoria side also featuring Andrea Poli and whose defeat confirmed their elimination.

• PSV's record away to Serie A opponents is W2 D2 L6.

• Milan beat Ajax 4-1 in the 1969 European Champion Clubs' Cup final but fell 1-0 to the same opponents in the 1995 final.

• Milan's shoot-out record in UEFA competition is:
2-3 v Liverpool FC, 2004/05 UEFA Champions League final
3-2 v Juventus, 2002/03 UEFA Champions League final
7-6 v FK Lokomotiva Košice, 1978/79 UEFA Cup first round

• PSV's record is:
6-5 v Tottenham Hotspur FC, 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16
4-2 v Olympique Lyonnais, 2004/05 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals
4-5 v Feyenoord, 2001/02 UEFA Cup quarter-finals
6-5 v SL Benfica, 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup final

Team ties
• Besides facing Milan with PSV as a player, Cocu was also in the Barcelona side that faced the Rossoneri in the 2000/01 first group stage and ended up eliminated, losing 2-0 at home and drawing 3-3 at San Siro. Cocu featured too in the Netherlands team eliminated by Italy on penalties after a goalless draw in the UEFA EURO 2000 semi-finals.

• Park scored as Manchester United FC beat Milan 4-0 at Old Trafford in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League round of 16, completing a 7-2 aggregate success. With United he also won ties against FC Internazionale Milano and AS Roma, as well as helping South Korea knock Italy out of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. More recently, he was on the United bench when Mario Balotelli scored twice for Manchester City FC in a 6-1 derby win at Old Trafford in October 2011.

• Jeroen Zoet, Adam Maher, Georginio Wijnaldum and substitute Memphis Depay played in the Netherlands' 1-0 loss to Italy in June's UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-finals. Riccardo Saponara was an unused Azzurrini substitute.

• Urby Emanuelson played alongside Florian Jozefzoon at Ajax in 2010/11 and was on loan at Fulham FC along with Stanislav Manolev for the second half of last season. Manolev scored for Bulgaria in a 2-2 home draw against Italy in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier last September.
