FC Shakhtar Donetsk have added to the Brazilian contingent in their squad after signing Bernard from CA Mineiro for a reported €25m.

The midfielder, 20 and already a senior international, has agreed a five-year contract with the Ukrainian title holders as they continue to strengthen ahead of the UEFA Champions League group stage. He becomes Mircea Lucescu's fourth Brazilian summer signing after Fernando, Wellington Nem and Fred.

Predominantly a left-sided player, Bernard is known for his pace, vigour and small frame – he is just 1.64m tall. He made the first of 62 league appearances for Atlético Mineiro in March 2011 and within six months he was in the Brazil squad. He has since played five times for the national team and was part of the Mineiro side – alongside Ronaldinho – that clinched the Copa Libertadores in July.

Shakhtar are two points clear of FC Metalist Kharkiv at the Ukrainian Premier League summit after four games.
