• Moyes started out with Celtic but spent much of his playing career as a centre-back in England and Scotland's lower leagues.

• The tall Scot appeared more for Preston than for any other club, and it was with the north-west English team that Moyes – ever the keen student of the game – first tested his managerial potential between 1998 and 2002.

• Became regarded as one of the country's most promising young managers, taking Preston from the third tier to the brink of promotion to the Premier League before accepting the Everton job in March 2002.

• Succeeding Walter Smith, he breathed new life into Everton immediately, his first full season seeing Wayne Rooney's emergence and a first top-half finish since 1996. The Blues went on to finish fourth in the Premier League in 2004/05 but missed out on a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage after a qualifying loss to Villarreal CF.

• Moyes subsequently led an Everton team featuring astute signings such as Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka to three further European qualifications and the 2009 FA Cup final, yet silverware eluded him in his 11 years at Goodison Park. In May 2013, not long after turning 50, Moyes was named as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor as Manchester United manager.
