PSG dig deep to lure Cavani from Napoli

Edinson Cavani has been unveiled by Paris Saint-Germain FC following the completion of his French record €64m transfer from SSC Napoli.

The Uruguay striker, 26, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract after passing a medical on Monday. The widely reported fee would eclipse the €60m that Ligue 1 newcomers AS Monaco FC paid to sign Falcao from Club Atlético de Madrid at the end of May.

"The club's vision is very inspiring, very ambitious," Cavani said. "This is also the way I think. I always want to win. Paris are a club competing at the highest international level. They are part of the group of teams that can fight to win the UEFA Champions League."

The move ends the forward's prolific three-season spell at Napoli, where Cavani scored 104 goals in 138 appearances in all competitions, including a Serie A-leading 29 in 34 top-flight games last term. His new team-mate at PSG, Zlatan Ibrahimović, took the Capocannoniere title in 2011/12 as an AC Milan player before heading to France.

Cavani's only winners' medal in seven years in Italy – he spent four campaigns with US Città di Palermo before joining Napoli – was in the 2011/12 Coppa Italia. However, the former Danubio FC attacker did lift the Copa América with Uruguay in 2011.

Laurent Blanc's PSG kick off their Ligue 1 title defence on 9 August with a trip to Montpellier Hérault SC. They will learn their UEFA Champions League group stage fate when the draw takes place in Monaco on 29 August.
