FC Bayern München must do without the services of Holger Badstuber for a further ten months after the Germany defender underwent surgery having ruptured a cruciate ligament in his right knee for the second time this season.
The 24-year-old centre-back had recently returned to training after recovering from an initial rupture to the same ligament that occurred in December's 1-1 draw with UEFA Champions League final opponents Borussia Dortmund. However, a cruel twist of fate has forced Badstuber, who made 18 appearances in all competitions this term, into another operation.
Bayern announced at the weekend that they expected the surgery to sideline Badstuber for an additional six months. However, they have since increased that estimate. "Holger Badstuber has undergone surgery by Dr Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado," read a club statement on Wednesday. "The torn ACL was removed and a new ligament will be put in place after the boreholes from the original surgery have grown back. The doctors estimate a recovery period of up to ten months, but his career is not in danger."
