Pepe and Ramos hope for Madrid miracle

"If one team can turn this tie around on home turf, it's us," said Real Madrid CF defender Pepe as he, Sergio Ramos and Raphaël Varane reflected on their Dortmund debacle.

The Real Madrid CF players were disappointed but defiant in the wake of their 4-1 UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, insisting their 'Décima' dream is not over yet despite the Merengues needing a minimum of three goals in next Tuesday's return leg.

While Pepe pointed to previous comebacks on home turf, his defensive colleague Sergio Ramos is confident the support of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu faithful will give José Mourinho's side the added boost they require to turn the tables in the Spanish capital.

Pepe, Madrid defender
Obviously we're not happy with the result tonight, but if there's one team who can turn this tie around on home turf, it's us, Real Madrid. We need to score three goals in the return match and that's not impossible for us. We've done it many times before, especially at home. We didn't start either half well tonight and kept making the same old mistakes. If we can sort that out and fight for every minute of the second leg as if it were our last, we can still reach the final.

Sergio Ramos, Madrid defender
Of course, it's a really bad result, especially because we face another tough game against them in the second leg. To overhaul a deficit like this against a German side isn't going to be easy, but 90 minutes at the Bernabéu is a long time for any opponent and obviously we want to use that time to score three goals. We'll create more chances in the return leg than we did here and we'll just have to try our luck. With our fans behind us we can still reach the final. Once you get to the semis, you want to get to the final.

Raphaël Varane, Madrid defender
We didn't expect a result like this. We expected a much more positive result. We approached the game with plenty of ambition. We went down to a very aggressive team who were compact and gave us no space. Lewandowski played really well and we failed to stop him. It's more a team failure than an individual one.
