Mario Götze emphasised the importance of Borussia Dortmund's second goal in their 3-0 second-leg victory over FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, telling UEFA.com his tidy finish shortly after Felipe Santana's opener was crucial to the Schwarzgelben reaching the last eight. The Germany midfielder also paid tribute to the BVB fans, while defender Neven Subotić said he was just "happy to be part" of such a promising young team.
Mario Götze, Dortmund midfielder
I think we showed we really wanted it today and put in a very good performance. It only got easier after we went 2-0 up – that really played into our hands and was enormously important for us. Thankfully, we got the third goal in the second half as well and were able to calm things down.
It's always a great atmosphere here. It's unbelievable what the fans do for us. The Champions League is a very special competition – and not just for us. The fans really got behind us even after we went 2-0 and 3-0 up. It was a great experience.
Now we can look forward to the quarter-finals. Personally I have no preference as far as the draw goes. The teams are all very strong in terms of quality, so it doesn't really matter who you're up against.
I'm very happy to have been chosen as man of the match. Most of all I'm happy for the team, but obviously it's great for me personally to get the award.
Robert Lewandowski, Dortmund forward
Obviously we're pleased to have won 3-0 and with a very good performance. I think we were the better team from the first to the last minute. We showed tonight that we have a very good team. We scored three goals and created the chances to score even more.
Now we can relax and look forward to the draw. It could be Schalke or Bayern – anything is possible, there are no weak teams left in the competition. Real Madrid? Why not. We're a good team too and we have a chance of reaching the final, but we need to remain focused. We'll have to wait and see who we get in the next round.
Neven Subotić, Dortmund defender
We're very happy with the way we played today. I don't think it was a lucky win – we really earned it. We played well away to Shakhtar, had everything in our hands today and we made the most of it.
This is a new experience for us. We're young and it's the first time we've got this far in the Champions League, so it's really amazing. I'm so happy to be a part of this team. We showed the whole world that, even though we're young, we have the courage and quality to do it our way.
Luck plays a big part. Last year we had a lot of bad luck in games where we played better and ended up losing, but this year we've learned from our mistakes and are a little more experienced, as we showed tonight. The only way Shakhtar were going to score was if we did something stupid, and we didn't, so that shows we're maturing.
At this stage of the Champions League all the games are going to be tough and I don't really care [who we get]. I'm just happy to be in the next round.
