Valencia CF are drawing conviction and ambition from their performances ahead of their next test, at home to FC Bayern München, as they attempt to win UEFA Champions League Group F. A goal and an assist for Roberto Soldado's penalty from Jonas, plus a fine pair of strikes by Sofiane Feghouli, should have given the home side a comfortable night, but they admit that they relaxed and were punished by FC BATE Borisov for whom Renan Bressan excelled.
Jonas, Valencia forward
The way the group has gone looks good for us. The UEFA Champions League is a competition that fills us with pride and one I always dreamed of playing in when I was back in Brazil. To be here talking to UEFA.com again as Player Rater winner is a real pleasure but the main thing is having helped win a difficult and important match for Valencia.
The fact we were in control but then relaxed and didn't protect our lead sufficiently is a wake-up call for us, even though we killed things off with the fourth goal pretty quickly. But we won't be able to nod off against a top-quality side in a game where there is no margin for error. We know Bayern are a great side and were runners-up last year. They are full of quality. But we will set out to win that game, we need to beat them. It's at home, in front of our fans, and this squad is full of hunger to beat Bayern and top the group. They are good but we can beat them and I'd really like the fans to turn out and make it a full Mestalla.
Sofiane Feghouli, Valencia midfielder
That was a decent display against a side that really knew how to make our life difficult. They can play, they really work hard and when they press they do it well. However, that only increases the satisfaction now we have won.
What we've set up is a mini-final against Bayern. If we want to top the group, which we do, then we must beat them. It means the next match will be a great match, a real spectacle. We know they were beaten finalists last season but we have confidence in ourselves and if we continue to show that confidence and to create good passages of play as we did today then we'll be fine.
Renan Bressan, BATE midfielder
If you come to play an in-form Valencia you simply can't make as many mistakes as we did. It's not easy to come to a Spanish club and score twice. We made the game a little more difficult for them by doing that but we also made too many errors in attack and defence. Valencia are in really good form – they probably got five chances and scored four.
We started the second half really well but then they scored immediately and once they had that third goal we managed to hit back with a couple and suddenly we were playing better than them. But their fourth killed us off.
We still have a chance of qualifying so we will fight till the end of the group. We have six points and the top two nine. We have a good chance of beating Lille while Valencia have a really tough game at home to Bayern. Our final game is against Bayern but having beaten them at home we know we can beat them in Germany, no matter how hard that will be.
Aleksandr Hleb, BATE midfielder
If we had started the first half like we played the second then perhaps we'd have been leaving here with some points. We made two big mistakes then only started to play when we were 2-0 down, but today Valencia were better than us. They are a better team, they have more quality, they are quicker and we made a lot of mistakes. There was a minimum of two goal chances before we even started playing and pressing properly. We were back in it at 3-2 but the fourth Valencia goal finished us.
This team is young, we need to learn how to work together on the pitch but we try to do our best all the time. Theoretically, we still have a chance of qualifying but we understand it will be difficult. First we will go home and analyse this game and try to work out why we played like this.
