FC Spartak Moskva general director Valeri Karpin has stepped in as caretaker coach for the rest of 2012 following the departure of Unai Emery on Sunday.
Emery's reign was ended after a 5-1 home league loss to FC Dinamo Moskva, which came hot on the heels of the 3-0 UEFA Champions League defeat by FC Barcelona at Stadion Luzhniki that put Spartak out of Europe. Former midfielder Karpin was previously at the helm between April 2009 and May 2012, securing two second-placed finishes in the Russian league.
Spartak, seventh in the Russian Premier League, face FC Zenit St Petersburg and FC Rubin Kazan prior to the winter break, and have a valedictory European fixture at Celtic FC on 5 December.
