Sunday's 5-1 home defeat by rivals FC Dinamo Moskva proved Unai Emery's last act in charge of FC Spartak Moskva after he was dismissed with the club lying seventh in the Russian Premier League.
Spartak chief executive Valeri Karpin said: "Following a board meeting, it has been agreed that Unai Emery will no longer be coach of Spartak. The next steps the club will take will be announced in the coming days."
Emery's reputation soared during a two-year spell at UD Almería, before he guided Valencia CF to third place in the Liga in both 2009/10 and 2010/11. The 41-year-old accepted his next challenge with Spartak in June and immediately led the club to a UEFA Champions League group stage berth.
However, four defeats from five games – the latest a 3-0 home loss to FC Barcelona – have consigned them to the bottom of Group G and put paid to any European ambitions this term.
