Feghouli impressed by Valencia character

Deputising in an unfamiliar right-back role for a team with ten men, Sofiane Feghouli epitomised Valencia CF's spirit, putting his side ahead in the 1-1 Group F draw with FC Bayern München. Visiting forward Claudio Pizarro was left shaking his head at a lost opportunity to take three points, though both clubs have the consolation of having confirmed a place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

I'm hugely pleased with the character we showed tonight. We worked so hard with ten men, pulled together and set aside the fact it was very tough to play Bayern with ten men for the majority of this match. If the boss asks me to adapt and play right-back, as he did tonight, I'll not only do it but I'll give absolutely everything. This was a difficult day to attempt it because Bayern are certainly one of Europe's best sides. But I'm happy with how it went and it's just part of my personal growth as a Valencia player. It's a good point but we could have won. Now our objective is to top the group by winning in Lille.

LOSC Lille are still a strong side who do things well but we have our qualities, plenty of them, so we'll go to France with the single goal of getting a good result and we'll wait to see if that's good enough to make us group winners. It's a place I know well from having played there, and knowing the LOSC dressing room there will probably be a few jokes between us before the game. We are in a much more relaxed situation in that we go there already having qualified, while LOSC know they can't go on in Europe this season.

As for tonight, this was a really good performance because we had ten men playing against one of the best teams in the world and we very nearly took all three points. If we continue in this spirit, with this effort, we'll do well.

We should have controlled the game and finished it off. Not only because we were 11 men against ten but because we had plenty of opportunities. It's a bit frustrating that we had such an opportunity to win but we didn't manage it.

Let's see what happens in the last match. In theory we have the advantage of playing at home [against FC BATE Borisov] and it would be ideal if we could win and then top the group. As for Valencia, they close up well at the back and are smart on the counterattack. That's probably the reason we were a little caught out and badly positioned at the back when they scored – and found ourselves chasing an equaliser depite having a numerical advantage.

We had a man advantage for over an hour so we definitely should have won. As often happens when you have one player less, the team pulls together, works harder and some run more than they would have done. The positive thing is that we are top of the group thanks to this draw but there is some room for improvement. BATE at home will still be a tough game – when teams come to play Bayern in Munich, they close up tight because they don't want to lose.
