Jonas wants victorious Valencia to push on

Valencia CF had a pair of Jonas goals to thank for three Group F points against LOSC Lille, and the Brazilian believes the victory must serve as a starting point for their UEFA Champions League campaign rather than the highlight. Roberto Soldado combined with Jonas for a fine first strike, showing a cutting edge that the French team lacked throughout, to leave midfielder Franck Béria wishing the point-less visitors had been more effective.

Our ultimate objective is to ensure we are in the last 16 of this competition next year, so it was absolutely vital that we took these three home points. We just need to continue with this kind of performance and result.

In the first half-hour we weren't getting space, but as that changed – and we were fluid and attacking in our play – the opening goal arrived. That allowed us to relax into our play a little bit in the second half. However, I have to congratulate LOSC. They not only defended strongly, they played well, produced good counterattacks and showed they can perform well at pace.

Now we face back-to-back matches against BATE and they'll be super-important. In fact, they may decide our destiny in this competition. We have to take points from both contests if we are to meet our goal of getting through the group stage.

Roberto Soldado, Nelson Valdez and me know there is more responsibility on our shoulders than on the rest of the team because we have to produce the goals. I'm delighted that I got two tonight but the first should be shared 50-50 with Roberto. He's a really intelligent player. He got away from his marker and produced a lovely one-two. It's moments like that that win matches.

We knew that winning at home was vital and LOSC are a big team in France, so to take the three points is a job well done. We need to thank our fans – they were right behind us. They support us loudly and colourfully and if there is a little bit of whistling at any time when things go badly, the boys behind the goal just shout louder. It's great and it unites everyone.

I guess we all thought Bayern would win the other Group F match but when we finished we found out that BATE had produced a big victory. In a couple of weeks we have to go and face them in their stadium, and it's going to be a game where we can't let them take charge of things

We saw the difference between a team that was clinical and took its chances and us. We had seven or eight opportunities but haven't scored, plus we also had a better first half than they did, but at half-time it was 1-0 to Valencia.

Their second goal was a bit peculiar – special, yes, but perhaps not deliberate. He hit it from right out on the touchline and there was a lot of luck in the fact it went in. But Valencia made their own luck too. On nights like tonight, when the ball just won't go in for you, you have to know how to close things up and not concede. We couldn't do that.

When you create so many chances and so nearly get goals it's positive. We created too many chances and had too much possession for us to start getting nervous or to doubt ourselves. In our next game, we need to make the same chances and take them. That will get us out of this rut.
