Overall we played a confident match. In the first half we needed a lot of patience. As you could see, Valencia are very well organised. They play a good pressing game and bring lots of bodies back to defend. It was not that easy to win today. Nevertheless, we should have made more of our midfield pressure and maybe we could have been a bit more adventurous going forward.
In the second half, it took us a little while to get into the game. It is clear that Javi Martínez will need time to settle and find his place in the team. He has to adapt to our way of playing and to get used to the team. That takes time, even though he already looks quite good.
Franck Ribéry is suffering from the same muscle stiffness in his thigh which he picked up playing for France. We will have to wait and see how it develops in the next few days.
Valencia tried to counterattack, but we gave them hardly any chances to score. We conceded a late goal, which cannot happen so easily in future. Missing the penalty is also something we won't get away with again.
Mauricio Pellegrino, Valencia coach
We gave the ball away a lot, especially in the first half. We had no support when we brought the ball out, and we were not in the right positions. In the second half we improved, but against a team like Bayern mistakes like these make things very difficult.
We pressed them better after the break and we know we can improve. We have some important players injured, but that is no excuse. We had chances to draw level when it was 1-0, but the second goal was crucial. The players have shown good character in a difficult game against a great team. Anything can happen in the group stage and the other result tonight leaves things very open.
