CFR's Andone aims for United revenge

CFR 1907 Cluj and Manchester United FC will meet for the first time when the three-time winners visit the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu for their second Group H fixture.

• CFR coach Ioan Andone has taken on United in the past, his FC Dinamo Bucureşti side beaten by Sir Alex Ferguson's team in 2004/05 UEFA Champions League qualifying.

• The Romanian champions began this season brightly, claiming a 2-0 win at SC Braga on matchday one when United edged out Galatasaray AŞ 1-0.

• CFR showed solid home form in this season's qualifying rounds, posting 1-0 wins against FC Slovan Liberec and FC Basel 1893.

• CFR's first home point in the UEFA Champions League came from a 0-0 draw with Chelsea FC in the 2008/09 group stage. It was their first encounter with English opposition and they followed it up with a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

• Although CFR took just that one home point in the 2008/09 group stage they fared better second time round in 2010/11, beating Basel and holding AS Roma on top of a defeat by FC Bayern München.

• United's only away success in last term's UEFA Champions League came on Romanian soil, 2-0 at FC Oţelul Galaţi through two Wayne Rooney penalties. They ended the night with ten men after Nemanja Vidić's dismissal.

• United's only other trip to Romania was for the aforementioned UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie against Andone's Dinamo Bucureşti in 2004/05. Ryan Giggs scored United's opening goal in a 2-1 first-leg win at Bucharest's old Lia Manoliu Stadium – the site of the new National Arena. Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes also played, though only Fletcher featured in United's 3-0 second-leg success.

Team ties
• Andone was a player in the Romania team beaten 3-0 in a March 1986 friendly against a Scotland side led, in his role as caretaker manager, by Sir Alex. Andone also played in Dinamo Bucureşti's 1-0 first-leg loss at Liverpool FC in the 1983/84 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final.

• Andone's only past success against English opposition came against Everton FC in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup first round, his Dinamo team winning the first leg 5-1 in Bucharest to set up a 5-2 overall triumph.

• Sir Alex visited Romania with Aberdeen FC in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup second round, earning a 2-2 draw – and a 5-2 aggregate win – against the club now called FC Argeş Piteşti.

• In May 2006 Nani made his Portugal Under-21 debut against France in the same team as Diogo Valente. Nani was in Sporting Clube de Portugal's youth ranks when Mário Felgueiras was the club's third-choice goalkeeper.

• Chris Smalling hit an 83rd-minute winner in England's 2-1 victory against Romania in a UEFA European U21 Championship play-off in Norwich in October 2010. Ioan Hora, who is at CFR but not in the UEFA Champions League squad, scored Romania's goal against an England team also including Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck.

• Patrice Evra faced Gabriel Mureşan in France's 2-2 FIFA World Cup qualifying draw with Romania in Constanta in October 2008, and lined up against Vasile Maftei in the 1-1 return draw in Paris.

• In the same South Africa 2010 qualifying group, Vidić was in the Serbia team that dismantled Maftei's Romania 5-0 in Belgrade to secure their finals berth. He also played in Serbia's 3-2 victory in Constanta.

• Giggs was in the Wales team denied a 1994 World Cup finals place by a 2-1 home defeat by Romania in Cardiff in November 1993. He was on the receiving end of a 5-1 loss in Bucharest in the same campaign.

• Scholes was a member of the England side eliminated from UEFA EURO 2000 after a 3-2 reverse against Romania in their final group game. He also lost 2-1 to Romania with England at the 1998 World Cup.

• Robin van Persie struck the second goal in the Netherlands' 2-0 win against Romania that ended their hopes of progress at UEFA EURO 2008.
