FC Barcelona will be without Gerard Piqué for up to three weeks after the central defender sprained his left ankle in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Group G opener against FC Spartak Moskva.

The Spanish international had to be replaced by Alex Song 12 minutes into a game Barcelona went on to win 3-2, Lionel Messi's double rescuing them after they had fallen 2-1 behind at the Camp Nou. Prior to his injury Piqué had played more competitive football than any other Barcelona outfield player in 2012/13 – 492 minutes in all competitions.

The 25-year-old's absence is a cause for concern since last weekend the club also learned that his regular centre-back colleague Carles Puyol would be sidelined for between four and six weeks after suffering a knee ligament injury. Both defenders are serious doubts for the UEFA Champions League matchday two fixture against SL Benfica in Lisbon on 2 October, as well as the 'Clásico' against Real Madrid CF at the Camp Nou five days later.
