Bolaños: Jacobs called FCK triumph perfectly

As Club Brugge KV blamed themselves for their elimination by FC København, Christián Bolaños and Nicolai Jørgensen paid tribute to their prescient Belgian coach Ariël Jacobs.

Christián Bolaños said FC København coach Ariël Jacobs had called their trip to Club Brugge KV perfectly as the Danish title holders twice came from behind to win 3-2 on the night after a 0-0 first-leg draw.

"Our coach told us that the game would not be over until the last minute – how true that was," said the Costa Rican, whose goal 12 minutes from time made it 2-2. César Santin's effort in the fifth minute of added time finally secured a place in Friday's play-off draw, leaving Club Brugge to rue two mistakes that cost them dear.

Christián Bolaños, FCK midfielder
The match was hard fought. Club Brugge are strong at home and we knew it. From the first minute we showed we were there to win, though. We were very focused on our job and I am delighted with the result. [My equaliser] was a special goal and I hope it will not be my last one, but it is more important that we went through.

We never gave in. Our coach told us that Club Brugge were strong at home, that the game would not be over until the last minute – how true that was. We know that a number of major teams await in the play-offs but we are striving for the top. We have to make the most of home advantage this time – we failed to against Club Brugge.

Nicolai Jørgensen, FCK forward
It was a very hard game and the last five minutes were unbelievable. We had a bit of luck and overall it was a great game. We played well and scored some good goals. For my own [to make it 1-1] the ball was right in front of me so I just closed my eyes and fired the ball in the goal.

The coach knows a lot about Belgian football so we talked in depth about the way Club Brugge play and this week we worked a lot on our defence and on our game plan – it was a great success. For the play-offs, I think Lille and Málaga are both very strong but all five teams we could face are unbelievably good. It will be a great tie whoever we are paired with.

Niki Zimling, Club Brugge midfielder
I am very disappointed. We were twice in front and ought to have maintained our advantage. We made two big mistakes and that is not good enough at this level, as we saw today – that is why we did not advance. We have to look ahead, focus on the good things and try to learn from the bad, and the bad thing today was giving away two goals too easily.

We have to work hard and keep on going. In Copenhagen it was a bit difficult but we were also quite fortunate. I do not feel we have lost to a better team – they are a good team and caused us problems, but we gave away two easy goals and that was the difference.

Jordi, Club Brugge defender
We knew it was very important to start the game with a goal and we did that. Then, after they equalised, we had to react again and having done so we probably played too high up the pitch and suffered on the counterattack. We had clear chances but in the end the result was a defeat and we have to learn from our mistakes.
