Trophy tour ends at festival park

The UEFA Champions League trophy tour reached the end of the line on Monday, delivering its precious cargo to the UEFA Champions Festival at Olympiapark.

The 11-stop circuit of Munich started at the city's airport on 28 April and has since wended its way through the Bavarian capital, setting up camp in several of its most beautiful squares. With Saturday's UEFA Champions League final at the Fuβball Arena München looming on the horizon, it embarked on the last leg on Monday, a parade around the city.

Two of FC Bayern München's favourite sons, Paul Breitner and Willy Sagnol, jumped aboard for the trip on the open-top bus. On a cold, clear day it made its way to Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz, Sendling-Tor-Platz and Stachus, picking up competition winners from the crowds that gathered for a glimpse of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Women's Champions League trophies.

They were referred to as the Holy Grail by one of the eight attendant guards, and Breitner says the term could be applied to the week as a whole. "This final is … a fantastic opportunity for Munich to showcase itself, like the Oktoberfest. It's a gift from heaven for Munich."

The bus arrived at its final stop at 18.00CET, dropping off the trophies at the Olynpiapark where the UEFA Champions Festival will take place from 16 to 19 May. The free four-day event offers visitors the opportunity to meet past tournament winners, watch a legends match, listen to live music and enjoy range of other football-themed activities.
