Bayern want more German misery for Madrid

FC Bayern München are just one step away from their dream of contesting the UEFA Champions League final in their home stadium but first they must overcome a Real Madrid CF side who visit Bavaria for the first leg of a duel between two authentic heavyweights of European football.

• The match pits Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who steered Madrid to the European crown in 1998, against José Mourinho, the man who engineered Bayern's downfall at the hands of FC Internazionale Milano in the 2010 final at the Santiago Bernabéu.

• Bayern will enter the contest buoyed by both an impeccable home record en route to the last four and an unbeaten record at home against Madrid.

• Between them the teams have 13 European Cups but both are hungry to add to their haul with Bayern, four-times winners, seeking a first title since 2001 and Madrid their first since 2002 and a record tenth overall.

Previous meetings
• Bayern hold the upper hand with ten wins to Madrid's six from the clubs' 18 past matches. The Bavarian side's home record against Madrid is W8 D1 L0.

• The clubs have met in four previous European Cup semi-finals with Bayern prevailing three times (1976, 1987, 2001) to Madrid's one (2000). Iker Casillas is the only survivor of the two most recent semi-finals.

• Both teams have won four of their eight previous two-legged encounters in the competition. The most recent came in the 2006/07 round of 16 when Bayern prevailed on away goals, losing 3-2 in Spain but winning 2-1 in Munich.

• Roy Makaay, with the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history, and Lúcio scored for Ottmar Hitzfeld's hosts before a late Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty for Fabio Capello's Merengues. The teams each finished with ten men, with Mark van Bommel and Mahamadou Diarra sent off.

Match background
• Madrid are unbeaten in this season's competition but Bayern have posted six straight home wins and overall have won 13 of their last 14 European home outings. The only blip came in the 2010/11 round of 16 when Inter won 3-2 in Munich.

• With four wins from five and just one goal conceded, Madrid's away form is almost as impressive but their record on German soil augurs less well. The Merengues' 22 previous visits have brought 15 losses and just one victory – 3-2 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2000/01.

• Bayern, by contrast, have an excellent home record against Spanish opposition, which reads W12 D5 L1. Their solitary defeat was a 3-2 reverse against RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2002/03.

• Bayern have a 7-6 win-loss record in two-legged contests with Spanish clubs in UEFA competition. Madrid's record against German sides is 10-7.

• Bayern twice overcame Spanish opposition in European Cup finals, beating Club Atlético de Madrid after a replay in 1973/74 and Valencia CF on penalties in 2000/01.

• Madrid have won all three European finals they have played against German sides. They lifted the 1959/60 European Champion Clubs' Cup after a famous 7-3 success against Eintracht Frankfurt, beat 1. FC Köln in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup, and defeated Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League.

• The winners will face Chelsea or Barcelona in the final in Munich on 19 May.

Team ties
• Heynckes won the UEFA Champions League in his solitary season at the Madrid helm in 1997/98, when they finished fourth in the Liga. He also had spells coaching Athletic Club (1992-94 and 2000-03) and CD Tenerife (1996/97).

• Heynckes has never beaten Spanish opposition in two-legged European ties as a coach. His four defeats include a 7-0 reverse at RC Celta de Vigo with SL Benfica in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup and an incredible 1985/86 UEFA Cup tie with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach where his side beat Madrid 5-1 at home but still lost on away goals. With Leverkusen last term he lost to Villarreal CF in the UEFA Europa League round of 16.

• As a Mönchengladbach player, Heynckes hit four goals in a 9-2 aggregate victory against Real Zaragoza in the 1974/75 UEFA Cup. In the following season's European Cup he scored against Madrid yet lost on away goals.

• Mourinho got the better of Bayern as Chelsea FC manager in the 2004/05 quarter-finals, though he was suspended for both legs. Chelsea won 4-2 in London and went through despite losing 3-2 in Munich.

• Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso helped Spain to a 1-0 UEFA EURO 2008 final win against a Germany side including Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez. Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil featured along with those six players when Spain earned another 1-0 success in the countries' 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final.

• In the quarter-finals of the same competition, Ángel Di María and Gonzalo Higuaín lost 4-0 to Germany with Argentina. Higuaín scored the only goal in Argentina's 1-0 friendly defeat of Germany at Bayern's stadium in March 2010.

• Kaká was a goalscorer when his Milan side eliminated Bayern in both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons.

• Arjen Robben scored 11 goals in 50 Liga appearances for Madrid between 2007 and 2009.

• Altıntop left Bayern for Madrid in 2011 after four seasons in Munich, 63 Bundesliga appearances and seven goals.

• Khedira was at VfB Stuttgart from 2006 to 2010, featuring in three wins, four losses and a draw against Bayern.

• Özil was on the winning side just once in eight games against Bayern with FC Schalke 04 and SV Werder Bremen, scoring twice.
