Champions League quarter-finals by numbers

With Real Madrid CF, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC all well placed to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, UEFA.com brings you all the key statistics ahead of this week's second legs including José Mourinho's formidable quarter-final record, a positive omen for SL Benfica and the race to claim the scoring prize.

Real Madrid look set to make it 23 wins from 29 European Cup quarter-final appearances following their 3-0 victory at APOEL FC. Madrid have an ominous record when winning the away first leg in UEFA competition, triumphing in 26 of the 27 ties, including all three where the away first leg finished 3-0 in their favour. The sole exception came against Odense BK in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round when a 3-2 away success preceded a 2-0 home reverse.

Mourinho has a 100% record in UEFA Champions League quarter-finals having won at this stage with FC Porto (2004), Chelsea FC (2005, 2007), FC Internazionale Milano (2010) and his present club last season, when they beat Tottenham Hotspur FC 4-0 at home and 1-0 away.

APOEL have lost all ten ties where they suffered a home first-leg defeat, including one by a 3-0 margin. Then, in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round, they went down 3-1 in the second leg at Servette FC.

Chelsea have won all five home games in this season's competition, scoring 14 goals and conceding only one. Before defeating SSC Napoli 4-1 after extra time in the round of 16 second leg, however, they had not won any of their last five UEFA Champions League knockout home matches.

The Blues have won through on all seven occasions after recording a first-leg away victory in UEFA competition, most recently against FC København in last term's round of 16 (2-0 away, 0-0 home). They have twice won a first leg away 1-0, against PFC CSKA Sofia in the second round of their victorious 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup campaign (1-0 at home) and VfB Stuttgart in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (0-0 at home).

Benfica have met London opposition twice before in European Cup knockout ties and prevailed both times, against Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 1961/62 semi-finals and Arsenal FC in the 1991/92 second round. More worryingly for the Portuguese side, only twice in UEFA Champions League history has a side recovered from losing the first leg at home to win the tie, although both those clubs did lose the first leg 1-0: AFC Ajax against Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals (3-0 away) and Inter against Bayern in last season's round of 16 (3-2 away).

Benfica have lost the first leg at home in UEFA competition on just four occasions, and went on to an aggregate defeat three times. Their sole 1-0 home first-leg defeat, however, preceded a 2-0 away victory at FC Dinamo Bucureşti in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round.

A rare blank matchweek for Lionel Messi means the FC Barcelona forward is still on 12 goals, matching the competition record set by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002/03 and his own mark from last season. Bayern's Mario Gomez did find the net, his opening goal at Olympique de Marseille taking him on to 11 for this season.

Messi's next UEFA Champions League goal will be his 50th. Only Raúl González (71), Van Nistelrooy (56) and Thierry Henry (50) have previously reached that landmark.

Arjen Robben was also on target for Bayern in Marseille; the Dutchman's last seven UEFA Champions League goals have all come in the competition's knockout stages.

Bayern have won 12 of their last 13 UEFA Champions League home outings. This season they have won five in a row; they last lost in last season's round of 16 when Inter won 3-2 in Munich to eliminate their hosts on away goals.

Last season's setback was the first time in 21 UEFA ties in which Bayern had won the first leg away but lost the tie. Of the four occasions Bayern recorded a 2-0 away first-leg victory, they subsequently earned three draws and a victory in the home returns.

Marseille have lost three of the four UEFA ties in which they have suffered a home first-leg defeat. The sole exception was the most recent, against FC Twente in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 32, when a 1-0 reverse at the Vélodrome was followed by an away victory by the same scoreline, Marseille winning 7-6 on penalties.

There is little between Barcelona and AC Milan, who have met 14 times in UEFA competition; the Spanish team have recorded five wins to Milan's four and scored 19 goals to the Italian side's 18.

Barcelona have recorded 22 away first-leg draws in UEFA competition, winning 17 of those ties. Their record is more mixed when drawing 0-0 away first, recording three overall wins – including the most recent tie, which featured a 2-0 second-leg defeat of SL Benfica in the 2005/06 quarter-finals – and two losses.

Milan have been held at home in the first leg on eight previous occasions in UEFA competition and have won six of those ties. This includes all four when the first game finished goalless, most recently against neighbours  Inter in the 2002/03 semi-finals, when a 1-1 draw in the away leg took Milan into the final on away goals.
