Pablo Aimar has agreed a 12-month contract extension with SL Benfica which will keep the former Argentinian international in Lisbon until summer 2013.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder has committed to another year with the club he joined from Real Zaragoza ahead of the 2008/09 season and for which he has scored 12 goals in 85 Portuguese Liga games.
"I'm very proud they want me for another year," said former CA River Plate schemer Aimar, who won two Spanish championships and the 2003/04 UEFA Cup at Valencia CF. "It wasn't difficult to reach an agreement as both parties wanted this. It's another highlight of my career and my life."
Benfica also moved to secure extended deals with Aimar's countryman Javier Saviola and full-back Maxi Pereira in recent weeks, while picking up forward Yannick Djaló as a free agent. The Eagles take on FC Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, kicking off in Russia on 15 February, with the tie concluding in the Portuguese capital on 6 March.
