FC Bayern München will be shorn of the services of defender Daniel Van Buyten for the next few weeks after the Belgian international suffered a metatarsal fracture in his left foot.
Van Buyten, who has scored four goals in 13 league appearances for Bayern this term, sustained the injury in a collision with striker Marco Reus during his side's 3-1 Bundesliga loss at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. Although the 33-year-old centre-back underwent immediate surgery, it remains unclear exactly how long he will be out of action.
"We can't make a credible estimate of the length of his lay-off until after the operation," said Bayern's chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. Van Buyten is nonetheless a serious doubt for his side's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg trip to FC Basel 1893 on 22 February, with the second leg to be held in Munich on 13 March.
