England defender Gary Cahill has finalised his move to Chelsea FC from Premier League rivals Bolton Wanderers FC.

The 26-year-old, who had only six months left on his Bolton contract, passed a medical on Saturday before watching his new side beat Sunderland AFC. Cahill has now signed a deal reported to run until 2017, after a transfer thought to be worth €8.5m.

"Chelsea is a massive club, it is a club that looks to win trophies season in, season out, and it is a big opportunity for me to be a part of that," said the centre-back, who played 130 Premier League games for Bolton. "Opportunities like this you can't turn down."

At Bolton since a 2008 switch from Aston Villa FC, Cahill made his England debut in September 2010 and played four times in the successful UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign.

He joins a Chelsea team preparing to face SSC Napoli in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on 21 February and 14 March, with Cahill hoping to make his first appearance in the competition.
