Heiko Vogel has been rewarded for guiding FC Basel 1893 into the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with a permanent deal until summer 2014.
The 36-year-old German took temporary charge on 14 October after the departure of the man he was assisting, Thorsten Fink, to Hamburger SV, and the former FC Bayern München youth coach promptly steered the Swiss champions to a runners-up spot in Group C courtesy of a memorable 2-1 victory against Manchester United FC last week. They now take their place in the round of 16 draw from 12.00CET on Friday.
"We have been convinced of Heiko right from the beginning and given the results in the last week this is a logical step," said Basel vice-president Bernhard Heusler.
Basel's progress in the UEFA Champions League has been matched by their impressive domestic form with Vogel yet to taste defeat during his time in charge. The title holders are seven points clear at the Super League summit as they go in search of a third successive championship.
