Deschamps' Marseille braced for Dortmund mission

Olympique de Marseille coach Didier Deschamps told his players to forget about events in Athens and focus on getting the result they need at Borussia Dortmund to secure second place in Group F. "We should look to ourselves," said the Frenchman, whose counterpart Jürgen Klopp is under no illusions about the size of the task facing his Dortmund side, who must beat Olympique de Marseille by four goals or more – and hope Olympiacos FC lose against Arsenal FC – to deny the Ligue 1 side second spot in Group F.

• Marseille are second so a victory in Germany would be sufficient, or a draw if Olympiacos failed to beat Arsenal. They can even afford to lose by three goals if Olympiacos lose or by a one or two-goal margin if the other game is drawn. Dortmund need to beat Marseille by four goals or more and hope Olympiacos lose, or by five goals or more should Olympiacos draw.

Our position is what it is. We have to win to stay in Europe and we have to win by a big margin to stay in the Champions League. We have brought this situation on ourselves and now we have to face it. For OM it is only about not losing by a big margin. A small defeat might be OK for them, which of course depends on the other match.

Their strength is defending well and then quickly swapping to the counterattack, at least that's how they played against us. That caused us quite some problems in Marseille, where we were the superior side but did not take our chances and suffered a terrible result [3-0].

To win by a big margin you have to take the lead first. We have to enter this in a very attacking mood, but cannot all start running into their area, or we will play into their hands. A lot of things are possible in football, but we cannot sit here today and say we will just walk over Marseille.

It is difficult to play even more attacking football than we usually do. We cannot enter the game with just attackers and three defenders. I will look into the players' eyes today in training: Who is fit? Who has the belief to turn this around? Then we will decide a lineup.

We should look to ourselves. We could have had things another way if we had not lost the last match against Olympiacos. We let a big chance slip away against Olympiacos, but now we have another one. It doesn't matter that much now what Arsenal do and what Arsène Wenger decides to do. We have it in our own hands. At half-time, we can maybe think about the result in the other game, but it is always best to look at yourself.

I know how good the atmosphere is here. Dortmund's position is not so complicated – they have to win big to still be playing in the Champions League after winter. We know that they have an attacking side with lots of quality. We expect another big Champions League game. I would not say that we have the duty to go through. Of course, that is our goal, though. Going through would mean lots of money for us and given our cash-strapped situation we could surely use this.

Our season so far has been characterised by ups and downs, but our win against PSG has helped us get back to our old selves and we were able to confirm that against Caen. Dortmund will not change their way of playing, they will continue to play an attacking game. They have a very creative midfield and attacking full-backs. They will surely go on the attack from off and we have to defend well and then use the spaces we will surely get.
