Marco Streller felt good fortune as well as FC Basel 1893's goal prowess lay behind a 3-0 advantage which appeared to make it an easy night for them in Bucharest before FC Oţelul Galati struck back with two late goals.
The Swiss champions held on to set up an intriguing meeting with Manchester United FC on matchday six, when a home victory would eliminate the three-time winners. In contrast, a fifth successive defeat signalled the end of Oţelul's European adventure and they acknowledged they have learned harsh lessons in Group C.
Marco Streller, Basel captain
It was easy for 50 minutes – I say easy but we also had some luck because we had three or four chances and scored three goals – but then we got a bit confused and it became dangerous for a time. If you lead 3-0 and then your opponents score it can become tough and that's what happened but we are very happy with the win.
I was so happy to score my first Champions League goal and I also had a hand in the other two goals but we are a team and I have good players around me. It was far more important that the team won and that's what happened. Now it's amazing that we have the chance to go into the next round with the match against Manchester United. We are all looking forward to that game.
Benjamin Huggel, Basel midfielder
We were very efficient in the first half and took our chances but in the second half we didn't concentrate as well. But we came for the win and we achieved it so we are very happy. It means that the worst we can finish is third but obviously there's the chance to go through to the next round and at the same time knock Manchester United out of the competition.
United are a world-class team with world-class players but we so nearly pulled off the win there in September and we are confident that we can win in our own stadium.
Gabriel Giurgiu, Oţelul captain
We started the game just as we had prepared but they scored twice after two mistakes and it was hard to continue with our initial plan. I scored a nice goal but it's hard to have beautiful memories when you have lost the game. The Champions League is a hard competition – we all realise that now.
Liviu Antal, Oţelul midfielder
We were extra motivated in the second half and we demonstrated that we could come back but it was not enough to draw level. It was nice to score but we have lost the game, a game we were supposed to win. In the Champions League we have learned that you can't afford to make mistakes. Now our big wish is to win or draw our last game in Lisbon [against Benfica].
