Back to basics for Shakhtar after Zenit draw

We have to be grateful for the point because Zenit ought to have won. They made us play their game, based on physical attributes and a determination to quickly shift defence into attack. They put great pressure on our defenders, who started to make mistakes. The defenders' nerves passed onto our attacking players.

Zenit played better than I had expected, though I ought to add that Jadson had two wonderful opportunities when it was 2-1. If he had scored we could have won. Mistakes from [Dmytro] Chygrynskiy and [Olexandr] Chyzhov led to the [Viktor] Fayzulin goal.

I haven't named our goalkeeper the man of the match for a long time. This game is an important lesson for me, as well as for our Brazilians. They should understand that you cannot win every match using technical skills alone.

The draw has weakened our chances of reaching the knockout stages. I hope we play better next time. [Yaroslav] Rakitskiy, our key defender, will be able to play in St Petersburg. Also, I need to improve the physical condition of the team.

I think it was a decent match and I can commend myself on having such great players. They coped with a game of real intensity, rhythm and quality. Obviously we're a bit disappointed as we should have achieved more.

I'm not pleased with the result, but we should emphasise the positives. The team came here and put on a great performance, created lots of chances – a very hard thing to do in Donetsk. The penalty we wasted was probably one of the least clear-cut opportunities we had this evening.

I don't think we'll have a psychological advantage at home [on matchday four], but we need our guys to understand that they have it in them to play like this. Nevertheless, every match is a different story. Our group remains open, so we need to fight game by game. It's always harder when the teams are even.
