Valencia CF are expected to be without defender Hedwiges Maduro for the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stage after the Dutch international was ruled out for around four months with torn ankle ligaments.
Called up to the Netherlands squad for their concluding UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden, the 26-year-old former AFC Ajax player suffered the injury during a training session and failed to take part in either game. He has undergone a successful operation in Amsterdam.
"The injuries to the internal and external ankle ligaments were stabilised [but] we are going to have to work with the player for longer than we originally thought," said Jorge Candel, Valencia's chief medical officer. "In this case we could be talking about a period of four months."
Unai Emery's team have drawn their opening two UEFA Champions League Group E matches against KRC Genk and Chelsea FC and travel to Bayer 04 Leverkusen next Wednesday.
