Lyon endeavour pays off for Briand

Jimmy Briand has urged Olympique Lyonnais to turn Stade de Gerland into "a fortress that's impossible to breach" after helping the French side extend their year-long unbeaten home record with a 2-0 win against GNK Dinamo Zagreb in Group D. According to Jerko Leko, the Croatian champions paid for their lack of European experience, although the defender is confident of bouncing back against AFC Ajax next month.

Our objective was to build on the draw in Amsterdam with a win here. We worked hard and have been rewarded with an excellent win. We wanted to put Dinamo under pressure from the start and to make the most of our chances. We want Stade de Gerland to become a fortress that's impossible to breach. We've stayed unbeaten at home for a long time now and we have to keep the run going.

It was a good team performance. Our strength is our togetherness and our team spirit; everybody contributed to the victory. I wouldn't say I'm a specialist at scoring in the UEFA Champions League, but I'm enjoying these moments very much. When you score, it's a feeling of pure happiness. But I am here to learn. I'm trying to adapt quickly [to life at Lyon] and to raise my game to the level of the others. Now we'll think about the next league games before turning our attentions to Real Madrid.

My job is to finish off the moves and thankfully I am finding the net regularly. But if I am scoring it's thanks to the team's effort. I am able to benefit from the work the others are doing in closing down our opponents. I'm the guy who plays up front so it's my job to score. It was important to get the win because we only drew in Amsterdam and we have two big games coming up against Real Madrid. We're managing to start games well at home, finding the way to goal quickly. That has to be a good sign.

We weren't brave enough to try to get the ball under control and create opportunities. They scored after we made a mistake in midfield, allowing Gomis to go through. Our marking should have been better on the second goal too. We have lots of young players, many of whom are playing for the first time [in the UEFA Champions League], so maybe we paid a price for our lack of experience. But we are a different team in Zagreb. We have Ajax next at home and this is our opportunity to earn some points.
