OM look for home boost against Dortmund

Olympique de Marseille and Borussia Dortmund meet for the first time with the hosts anxious to improve on a record of seven defeats in their last 15 home UEFA Champions League matches.

• Didier Deschamps' team opened with a 1-0 victory at Olympiacos FC, while Dortmund needed a spectacular late strike from Ivan Perišić to rescue a 1-1 home draw against Arsenal FC.

Match background
• This is Marseille's first contest with a German team since the 1998/99 UEFA Cup when, in a second round tie against SV Werder Bremen, they followed a 1-1 away draw with a 3-2 win at home. Three other fixtures have produced two wins and a defeat, the reverse coming against FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup first round when a 1-0 home loss completed a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

• Dortmund have not scored in their last three visits to France. They last faced Ligue 1 opposition in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage when they drew 0-0 at Paris Saint-Germain FC.

• Their best result came at AJ Auxerre in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg when a 1-0 second-leg victory – their only success in France – secured a 4-1 aggregate triumph on their way to lifting the trophy for the first and only time.

• They also faced Auxerre on their last appearance in the competition's group stage, in 2002/03, losing 1-0 in France.

• Dortmund's record from 12 games against French sides reads W4 D5 L3 (W1 D2 L3 in France).

• Marseille are in their fifth successive participation in the competition and their eighth in all. In between lifting the trophy in 1993 and last season, they only advanced beyond the initial group stage on one occasion, reaching the second group stage in 1999/2000.

• Last season they finished second in their pool, three points behind Chelsea FC. They lost 1-0 at home to FC Spartak Moskva but then beat both MŠK Žilina and Chelsea 1-0 at the Stade Vélodrome. In the round of 16 they drew 0-0 at home to Manchester United FC before losing 2-1 away.

• OM will be looking to improve on their home record in Europe's elite club competition. In their last 15 fixtures in the competition proper they have only won five with seven defeats.

• This is Dortmund's seventh participation in the UEFA Champions League. In their 2002/03 first group stage campaign, Dortmund lost 2-0 at Arsenal as well as the defeat at Auxerre. In their other away game they beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1.

• In the second group stage they won at FC Lokomotiv Moskva (2-1) and AC Milan (1-0), but lost at Real Madrid CF (1-2).

Team ties
• Deschamps played for Juventus in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final, when Dortmund – with current sporting director Michael Zorc an 89th-minute substitute – triumphed 3-1 in Munich.

• André-Pierre Gignac and Perišić scored for their respective sides when Toulouse FC and Club Brugge KV drew 2-2 in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage. Perišić scored the 90th-minute equaliser on that occasion and the Croatian also notched the only goal – again in the final minute – when the teams met in Belgium on 16 December 2009.

• Damien Le Tallec and Stéphane Mbia were team-mates at Stade Rennais FC between 2008 and 2010 although the former never appeared in the French top flight.

• Antonio Da Silva and Elinton Andrade both started their careers at CR Flamengo.

• Mohamed Zidan scored twice for Egypt in their 4-2 victory against a Cameroon side including Mbia in a 2008 Africa Cup of Nations group fixture. Both teams made it through to the final. Mbia played the whole game while Zidan was brought on after the hour to help Egypt to their 1-0 victory.
