Djimi Traoré has joined UEFA Champions League group stage entrants Olympique de Marseille on a free transfer after being released from his AS Monaco FC contract at the end of last season.
Traoré, 31, made 36 league appearances in two seasons at Monaco and will bring a wealth of experience to Didier Deschamps's squad, having lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with Liverpool FC in 2004/05. The defender admits he is relishing the prospect of returning to Europe's premier club competition. "The Champions League is the best competition to play in with a club," he said. "It's something extraordinary for a player and it's one of the reasons why I chose Marseille."
OM have also released Édouard Cissé from his contract, with the defensive midfielder joining fellow Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre. Marseille will learn their UEFA Champions League group stage opponents in Thursday's draw, which will be held in Monaco at 17.45 CET.
