Shakhtar set to test new-look Porto

Fans with long memories may recall FC Porto's last meeting with FC Shakhtar Donetsk as the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League winners return to the UEFA Champions League in Group G.

Previous meetings
• The teams' only previous encounter came in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals, António Morais's Porto coming from 2-0 down to win the first leg at home 3-2, and then drawing 1-1 against Viktor Nosov's Shakhtar in the return.

• The teams for that game in Porto on 7 March 1984 were:
Porto: Zé Beto, João Pinto, Teixeirinha (Jaime Magalhães 29), Eduardo Luís, Eurico, Vermelhinho, Frasco, Sousa, Walsh, Jaime Pacheco, Costa (Jacques 35).

• Porto went on to reach the final, losing 2-1 to Juventus in Basle.

• It was the first time Shakhtar had reached a major European quarter-final. They did not match that achievement until they won the 2008/09 UEFA Cup, before they made a maiden appearance in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League last season, losing to eventual champions FC Barcelona.

• Porto's record in six games against Ukrainian sides is W4 D1 L1 (W2 D0 L1 at home). That includes two 2-1 wins against FC Dynamo Kyiv in the 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals, Porto going on to beat FC Bayern München 2-1 in the final in Vienna.

• Shakhtar's record in ten games against Portuguese sides reads W4 D2 L4 (W3 D0 L2 in Portugal). They came up against Portuguese opponents in last season's group stage, beating SC Braga 3-0 away and 2-0 at home.

• Porto have lost just once in their last nine European home games and have won their last three at the Estádio do Dragão since a 1-0 loss to Sevilla FC in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32.

• Porto have reached the group stage of the two major UEFA competitions 16 times and have yet to lose a matchday one fixture at home, recording three wins and five draws. Their overall record in group stage openers is W6 D7 L3.

• Shakhtar have won three of their last five European away games, though that run was punctuated by 5-1 defeats at Arsenal FC and FC Barcelona in last season's UEFA Champions League.

• Shakhtar have kicked off their last four group stage campaigns – three in the UEFA Champions League and the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League – with victories, two at home and two away.

Team ties
• Vítor Pereira's European debut came against Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup. The new man at the Porto helm is making his first appearance as a coach in Europe's top club competition.

• Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu led Romania as they lost 1-0 to Portugal at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, and then won 3-2 against same opponents in a Lisbon friendly the following year. His record in six games against Portuguese opponents with Shakhtar reads W3 D0 L3 (W2 D0 L1 away).

• Souza and Alex Teixeira played together at CR Vasco da Gama in 2008 and 2009, winning the Brazilian second division title in the latter campaign.

• Jadson scored Shakhtar's winner against SL Benfica 1-0 in a 2007/08 UEFA Champions League Group D match. Cristian Rodríguez started that match for Benfica before joining Porto the following season.

• Porto's Cristian Săpunaru and Shakhtar's Răzvan Raţ are international team-mates with Romania.

• Porto's Fredy Guarín and Shakhtar's Marcelo Moreno were on opposite sides in Colombia's 2-0 2011 Copa América win against Bolivia.

• Marcelo Moreno got both Bolivia goals in a 2-2 home draw against Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in October 2008; Porto's Cristian Rodríguez was in the visitors' lineup.

• Steven Defour featured as Belgium lost 2-1 in Armenia in 2010 World Cup qualifying, Shakhtar's Henrik Mkhitaryan starting for the hosts.
