R. Standard de Liège have turned to José Riga, the former assistant of recently departed coach Dominique D'Onofrio, to guide them through the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
The 53-year-old was second in command at Standard from 2002 to 2005 and has signed a two-year contract with the club who lifted the Belgian Cup last term and finished second in the league behind KRC Genk.
Riga joins Les Rouches from second division side CS Visé having previously had a spell in charge at RAEC Mons. "After the first approach the deal was done quickly," said Riga. "I want Standard to play dominant football and they already have a lot of assets, such as a terrific infrastructure, which I fully intend to use."
Meanwhile, the club have also announced that Belgian Under-21 coach Jean-François De Sart will be joining them next season in the role of sporting director.
