Real Madrid CF have confirmed they will be deprived of the services of forward Kaká for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Olympique Lyonnais because of a knee complaint.
The 28-year-old Brazilian international, who missed the first half of the season with a left knee injury, complained of discomfort in the same area following his side's scoreless Spanish Liga draw at RC Deportivo La Coruña on 26 February. Tests have now revealed water on the knee, which is expected to rule the former AC Milan player out for two weeks.
Kaká had not featured for the Merengues since the Deportivo game, which was his eighth league appearance of the campaign and his 11th in all competitions. The one-time São Paulo FC prodigy had been an unused substitute in the 1-1 first-leg draw with Lyon at Stade de Gerland on 22 February.
The news will nonetheless come as a blow to Madrid coach José Mourinho whose squad has already been shorn of midfielder Sami Khedira – who has a thigh problem – for next Wednesday's Santiago Bernabéu decider against the French team. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, remains doubtful with a left thigh injury.
