Doni admonishes self-destructive Roma

Goalkeeper Doni said AS Roma had been their "own worst enemy at times" after the Italian club lost 3-0 at FC Shakhtar Donetsk to confirm their elimination from the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Beaten 3-2 in Rome under Claudio Ranieri, the Giallorossi had hoped to reverse the deficit under new coach Vincenzo Montella and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges in Ukraine. However, they fell behind to Willian's cross-shot on 18 minutes, before scuppering their chances completely with a missed penalty followed by the dismissal of Philippe Mexès for two bookable offences.

"It was good that we tried to take the game to Shakhtar and tried to get ourselves back into the tie," reflected 31-year-old former Brazilian international Doni. "The bad thing was that we were our own worst enemy at times, as all the goals we conceded were preventable."

Mircea Lucescu's Ukrainian Premier League leaders showed no mercy, with Willian's well-taken second on 58 minutes piling on the misery before substitute Eduardo made it 3-0 three minutes from the end. Visiting defender Nicolás Burdisso was frank enough to say his team did not deserve to go through. "We did not work hard enough to qualify for the next round," said the 29-year-old. "Credit to Shakhtar who played well and took their chances, but unfortunately we were poor today and didn't make the most of our opportunities."

Indeed, Roma rarely threatened Andriy Pyatov's goal, leaving Montella's side with plenty to work on as they look to the future. Argentinian international Burdisso added: "We need to work on the way we play. Every team wants to win all the time, but we need to work on controlling the game, which we certainly didn't do. We don't have much time – the Champions League is behind us, but we have to concentrate on Serie A and make sure we qualify for Europe's premier competition again."
