Tottenham Hotspur FC have completed the signing of South Africa defender Bongani Khumalo from SuperSport United FC.

The 23-year-old centre-back has moved for a reported €1.8m fee and signed a contract until summer 2015. Khumalo impressed in a trial at Spurs last July having been part of South Africa's FIFA World Cup campaign – scoring in the hosts' 2-1 defeat of France – and helped SuperSport to three straight league titles, captaining them last season.

"I'm looking to learn as fast as I can and do all I can to contribute to this wonderful team," said Khumalo. "All the players are very professional and very good, genuine guys and quality players. I've been very fortunate to just be a part of that and take in the experience so far. They've done so well this season and there are quality players all around. I just want to be part of the success."

Having won their group in their UEFA Champions League debut season, Tottenham take on AC Milan in the round of 16, travelling to Italy on 15 February and hosting the 9 March return.
