Magath revels in Schalke 'success'

FC Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath said qualifying for the last 16 was a "great success" after a 3-0 win against Olympique Lyonnais, whose coach was far from unhappy despite going through.

Having watched FC Schalke 04 confound expectations by securing their place in the UEFA Champions League last 16, Felix Magath now wants his team to turn around their domestic fortunes and pull away from the foot of the Bundesliga. Claude Puel, whose Olympique Lyonnais are also through despite the 3-0 Group B reverse, said the defeat "hurts".

Felix Magath, Schalke coach
We were in great form from the first minute onwards and had two or three early chances. Our strikers combined perfectly with each other; it was a beautiful match for us. For many weeks people have said we were dead and buried but now we'll be playing in the Champions League next spring. This is a great success for us and we're very happy about it, but this does not help us in the Bundesliga.

Claude Puel, Lyon coach
We have mixed feelings tonight. We're through but we won't think about that before tomorrow. The main thing is the disappointment. We're disappointed to have played that way tonight. Even if everything is possible in the last game [against Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC], tonight's defeat hurts. The positive is that we're through and it's very important. We need to be able to play well from the off. We've shown a lot of character since the beginning of the season but now we must game manage games correctly from kick-off.
