Sorin Cârţu has been dismissed as coach of CFR 1907 Cluj in the wake of the Romanian side's elimination from the UEFA Champions League, with Alin Minteuan named as his temporary replacement.
The 55-year-old's fate was decided late on Wednesday in the aftermath of the 1-0 defeat at FC Basel 1893 which ensured that CFR would finish bottom of Group E. Former FC Universitatea Craiova striker Cârţu vented his frustration during the match in Switzerland, aiming a kick at his dugout in St. Jakob-Park which infuriated the CFR directors.
A club statement read: "The values and the image of CFR cannot be associated and linked with Sorin Cârţu's behaviour."
CFR had appointed Cârţu just before Matchday 1, but they have struggled under his guidance. Last season's domestic double winners lie eighth in the 16-team Romanian First Division and were eliminated in the Romanian Cup quarter-finals. Assistant coach Minteuan has been placed in caretaker charge, with Paolo Potocnik and Horea Carlan his assistants.
