CFR 1907 Cluj coach Sorin Cârţu knows a huge improvement is needed from his side if they are to recover from a 4-0 home defeat by FC Bayern München and secure at least third place in Group E. The Bavarian club have already qualified for the round of 16, Mario Gómez's hat-trick earning the visitors the three points and the striker words of praise from Louis van Gaal.
Sorin Cârţu, CFR coach
What should we say after a 4-0 defeat? Should we speak about bad luck? That would be out outrageous. The final score might be harsh, but it reflects the difference between us and them and we have to accept this reality. We were dreadful in the first half, playing completely differently to the way we discussed beforehand. We then dominated the first 25 minutes of the second and had plenty of opportunities, but their third goal came at an unexpected time and in an unexpected manner.
And at three-nil down you cannot really have high hopes against a team like Bayern. I don't want to think about what could have happened if all the Bayern players who were absent today would have played. Regardless of that, if we continue to play as we did in the first half, we won't even have a chance of reaching the Europa League.
Louis van Gaal, Bayern coach
We've improved in recent games and put in a very good performance today. It's great that we have a striker like Mario Gómez – I've adjusted our style of play so it suits his game better.
That was a very display from my team. In particular I liked our positional play, that was very good. We also attacked very well.
