Tottenham Hotspur FC manager Harry Redknapp did not attempt to conceal his excitement as he lavished praise on the "amazing" Gareth Bale, the hosts' inspiration behind a memorable 3-1 victory against FC Internazionale Milano. "He's got everything," he said of his left midfielder, scorer of a hat-trick in the 4-3 defeat by the UEFA Champions League holders a fortnight ago. Rafael Benítez did not disagree, though he conceded his side did not always make it hard for the Welshman.

Bale was amazing; the way the boy can run and run and run. He's against a guy rated as the best right-back in the world and what he's done over the last two games is amazing. He's got great ability. It's not just his pace, he can run all day, and keep running. He's got the ability to cross, his left foot is great on the run, he can shoot, dribble, head it – he's got everything. He's also a great lad. You couldn't meet a nicer, lower-maintenance boy than him. He just comes in and plays his football: fantastic young boy.

It was a fantastic night. From the first to the last we played unbelievably. Pressed them, outworked them; outplayed them all night. It was an amazing performance from every one of them. We're in a good position now. It was a big game, playing Inter at White Hart Lane, and everyone was here. All the Spurs fans can look back on it and I'm pleased to be part of that.

Rafael Benítez, Inter coach
Tottenham played with great pace and they often posed a threat when they attacked us. Gareth Bale is not easy to stop but we had to cover a bit better when he had space to go one-on-one. Maicon was good when he pushed in attack but obviously he had problems defending against Bale, especially when he had space to run into as we pushed up after their opener. The players know we didn't play well tonight; they know we have a lot of work to do as soon as we get back to Milan.

It wasn't easy at this stadium, with these fans and with Tottenham playing at such a high tempo because they were eager to beat the champions of Europe. We were also missing a few players in midfield like Thiago Motta, Esteban Cambiasso and Dejan Stanković; then we lost [Sulley] Muntari to another injury during the game. We could have qualified today: we didn't manage it but we'll try again next time.
