SV Werder Bremen midfielder Tim Borowski underwent surgery on his persistent ankle problem on Tuesday. It is not yet known when he is likely to return to action.
The 30-year-old last played in Bremen's 4-0 UEFA Champions League defeat by FC Internazionale Milano on 29 September and has been restricted to just four Bundesliga appearances this term. "I cannot put pressure on my foot but I will try to do some individual training sessions as soon as possible," Borowski said.
Defender Clemens Fritz, meanwhile, is suffering from a minor thigh injury sustained in Tuesday's 2-1 German Cup defeat by FC Bayern München and is a doubt for Bremen's match against 1.
