Edu takes the rough with the smooth at Rangers

Rangers FC midfielder Maurice Edu insists he will bounce back from his roller-coaster display in the 1-1 draw with Valencia CF.

The United States international put the Scottish titleholders ahead after 34 minutes on UEFA Champions League Matchday 3, but his impressive performance was tainted immediately after half-time when he deflected a Tino Costa free-kick into his own net.

"It was an evening of highs and lows," the 24-year-old said. "I felt a lot of excitement in scoring and then disappointment with an unfortunate own goal. That was definitely a down point, but the team did well and we created a lot of chances in the first half and even in the second we didn't let our heads go down after conceding. We'll be ready for the next game."

The result leaves Rangers second in Group C, trailing leaders Manchester United FC, but a point ahead of Valencia. Light Blues midfielder Steven Davis was content with the draw, but expressed frustration at failing to capitalise on the many opportunities the hosts had.

"We have to be happy with the point but at the same time we had enough chances to win the game," the Northern Irish international told UEFA.com. "We were slow to start with the first 15 to 20 minutes but then gradually got into the game and went 1-0 up. I thought we were quite comfortable after that and were obviously unlucky to concede the deflected goal.

"When the group came out we were expected to finish bottom, especially when you look at the amount of money the other teams have spent and positions in their respective leagues," he added. "We have shown we can compete at this level and have learned from the mistakes we made in the Champions League last season."

Valencia goalkeeper César Sánchez, who made a string of impressive saves before Edu broke the deadlock, thinks the return fixture at the Mestalla could now prove decisive in the battle for last-16 places.

"We need to win the next game against Rangers to get back into the top two," he said of the 2 November sequel. "This will be a very important point for us if we can win at the Mestalla. It is always nice to play in Scotland because the atmosphere is always very good."
