Allegri rues Milan deference in Madrid

As José Mourinho hailed a job well done for Real Madrid CF, the inquest began in the AC Milan camp, with the visitors never looking like threatening the Spanish side and conceding early goals to Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Özil. For coach Massimiliano Allegri, it was simple: his players had "showed too much respect".

We've done a fantastic job and were tactically very intelligent. I can only congratulate the players and I hope the fans are satisfied after that game. I like it when the supporters recognise the players' endeavour – it's something I need as a coach. The Santiago Bernabéu fans are intelligent; they understand football and know how to express their thanks.

I think that ten or 11 points and we're through, but we want to finish top of our group so we have to pick up more. If we don't lose in Milan, we will almost guarantee first place. We want things wrapped up before the final Matchday.

Our approach was all wrong tonight: we showed too much respect in the early stages. We could have been more dangerous playing more direct football but we didn't manage to do it. Real Madrid are a great side but it was all downhill for them after taking an early two-goal lead. We made two mistakes for their first goal: first, we didn't clear the ball from the penalty box and conceded a dangerous free-kick; then the wall opened up, allowing Ronaldo to score.

It was not a good night for us. With all respect to Madrid, one of the best teams in the world, I think we made their lives very easy with a soft approach. We only started to play when we were already 2-0 down. This has happened a few times recently and we have to change it as soon as possible.
