SL Benfica have announced that they have extended Portuguese international Fábio Coentrão's contract by another year, tying him to the club until 30 June 2016.
The Portuguese champions, who are away to FC Schalke 04 in UEFA Champions League Group B on Wednesday, have kept the 22-year-old's release clause at €30m. Coentrão, who can play either at left-back or on the left wing, enjoyed a superb season in 2009/10 as Benfica marched to the title.
He made his Portugal debut on 14 November 2009, and went on to play all four matches for his country at the FIFA World Cup in June. Benfica kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win at home to Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC a fortnight ago.
